Lippan Art wall decor Jharokha design with candle holder

Lippan Wall Décor (Jharokha) with Diya

Mud and mirror work is known as Lippan Kaam. It is a traditional mural craft of Kutch. It is also called Chittar Kaam. The origins of Lippan Kaam are unknown. Various communities in Kutch do mud-relief work and have their own distinct style of Lipan kaam. This Centuries old art of Lipan is also called clay relief work. It's a beautiful adaptation to make life easy in the harsh climate of Kutch. Mirrors reflect light and clay keeps the hut cool during the day. Just one candle illuminates the inside at night. Traditionally dung and mud mixture is applied on the walls of the hut and then decorated with small mirrors. This wall decor is our take on simplifying the art with modern craft supplies but still keeping the spirit of the traditional craft alive.
